About
Our Vision
To build a world-class, collaborative ecosystem for gastroenterology and hepatology research, education, and innovation across the West of Scotland. We aim to connect clinicians, scientists, and trainees through shared purpose — advancing understanding, discovery, and care in GI and liver disease.
Our vision is to position Glasgow and the West of Scotland as a centre of excellence in GI and Liver medicine, recognised for its strong academic pathways, impactful research, and inclusive clinical-scientific network.
Our Mission
The West of Scotland GI–Liver Collaborative exists to:
- Unite clinical and academic communities across Glasgow, Clyde, and Lanarkshire under a shared identity.
- Promote clinical-academic career pathways from undergraduate and PhD to consultant level.
- Foster translational research and discovery, combining data science, AI, and molecular medicine.
- Support clinical trials and biobank infrastructure to enhance patient participation and access.
- Inspire and train the next generation of clinician–scientists and academic leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology.
Our Story
The idea for the GI–Liver Collaborative was born from a shared recognition that the West of Scotland — with its strong academic foundations and large, diverse patient population — has immense potential to lead in translational research and clinical innovation.
In recent years, Glasgow and surrounding regions have developed:
- High recruitment rates in national and international GI and liver trials.
- Dedicated research platforms such as G-Trac and Orca, enabling large-scale data linkage and sample integration.
- A growing ecosystem of clinicians, trainees, and scientists contributing to both NIHR and commercial studies.
The Collaborative seeks to build on these strengths — bringing together partners from the University of Glasgow, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, NHS Lanarkshire, and NHS Clyde to create a seamless interface between clinical care, research, and innovation.
How We Work
Collaborative Model: We operate through open communication, shared resources, and aligned objectives across hospitals and research groups.
Cross-Disciplinary Integration: Projects span clinical medicine, immunology, microbiome science, nutrition, and data science.
Mentorship & Training: Senior academics support early-career clinicians through structured mentorship and project pairing.
Transparency & Equity: Commitment to equal access to research participation and opportunities across all West of Scotland sites.
